    Review of Reactor Neutrino Oscillation Experiments

    In this document we will review the current status of reactor neutrino oscillation experiments and present their physics potentials for measuring the θ13\theta_{13} neutrino mixing angle. The neutrino mixing angle θ13\theta_{13} is currently a high-priority topic in the field of neutrino physics. There are currently three different reactor neutrino experiments, \textsc{Double Chooz}, \textsc{Daya Bay} and \textsc{Reno} and a few accelerator neutrino experiments searching for neutrino oscillations induced by this angle. A description of the reactor experiments searching for a non-zero value of θ13\theta_{13} is given, along with a discussion of the sensitivities that these experiments can reach in the near future.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure

    Cytogenetic Research on Hexaploid Alfalfa, Medicago Sativa L.

    SUMMARYA spontaneously occurring hexaploid plant (2 n = 6x=48) was found among white-flowered tetraploid plants of Medicago sativa.This plant was studied from a morphological and cytological point of view. All the metaphases observed showed 48 chromosomes, six of which with large satellites. Total chromosome length ranged from μ 1.34 to μ 2.25 whereas that of tetraploid ranged from μ 2.08 to μ 2.83. Most diakinesis showed bivalents and 1 or, more frequently, 2 quadrivalents. Two or more univalents were observed in 56.4% of metaphases I and lagging chromosomes, varying in number from 1 to 4, were observed in 60% of anaphases II. Hexaploid pollen stainability (81%) was the same as in the tetraploid plants used as control (80%). The pollen grains were very variable in diameter (μ) and therefore two classes were distinguished: a smaller (diameter μ. 25.5) and a larger one (diameter μ 40.0).     Use of Urinary Pregnanediol 3-glucuronide to Confirm Ovulation

    Objective Urinary hormonal markers may assist in increasing the efficacy of Fertility Awareness Based Methods (FABM). This study uses urinary pregnanediol-3a-glucuronide (PDG) testing to more accurately identify the infertile phase of the menstrual cycle in the setting of FABM. Methods Secondary analysis of an observational and simulation study, multicentre, European study. The study includes 107 women and tracks daily first morning urine (FMU), observed the changes in cervical mucus discharge, and ultrasonography to identify the day of ovulation over 326 menstrual cycles. The following three scenarios were tested: (A) use of the daily pregnandiol-3a-glucuronide (PDG) test alone; (B) use of the PDG test after the first positive urine luteinizing hormone (LH) kit result; (C) use of the PDG test after the disappearance of fertile type mucus. Two models were used: (1) one day of PDG positivity; or (2) waiting for three days of PDG positivity before declaring infertility. Results After the first positivity of a LH test or the end of fertile mucus, three consecutive days of PDG testing over a threshold of 5 μg/mL resulted in a 100% specificity for ovulation confirmation. They were respectively associated an identification of an average of 6.1 and 7.6 recognized infertile days. Conclusions The results demonstrate a clinical scenario with 100% specificity for ovulation confirmation and provide the theoretical background for a future development of a competitive lateral flow assay for the detection of PDG in the urine

    Supporting the active learning of collaborative database browsing techniques

    We describe the implications of a study of database browsing behaviour for the development of a system to support more effective browsing. In particular we consider the importance of collaborative working, both in learning browsing skills and in co‐operating on a shared information‐retrieval task. From our study, we believe that an interface to support collaboration should promote the awareness of the activities of others, better visualization of the information data structures being browsed, and effective communication of the browsing process

    Numerical Implementation of lepton-nucleus interactions and its effect on neutrino oscillation analysis

    We discuss the implementation of the nuclear model based on realistic nuclear spectral functions in the GENIE neutrino interaction generator. Besides improving on the Fermi gas description of the nuclear ground state, our scheme involves a new prescription for Q2Q^2 selection, meant to efficiently enforce energy momentum conservation. The results of our simulations, validated through comparison to electron scattering data, have been obtained for a variety of target nuclei, ranging from carbon to argon, and cover the kinematical region in which quasi elastic scattering is the dominant reaction mechanism. We also analyse the influence of the adopted nuclear model on the determination of neutrino oscillation parameters.Comment: 19 pages, 35 figures, version accepted by Phys. Rev.

    Signatures of spin in the n=1/3 Fractional Quantum Hall Effect

    The activation gap Delta of the fractional quantum Hall state at constant filling n =1/3 is measured in wide range of perpendicular magnetic field B. Despite the full spin polarization of the incompressible ground state, we observe a sharp crossover between a low-field linear dependence of Delta on B associated to spin texture excitations and a Coulomb-like behavior at large B. From the global gap-reduction we get information about the mobility edges in the fractional quantum Hall regime.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Asymmetric Franck-Condon factors in suspended carbon nanotube quantum dots

    Electronic states and vibrons in carbon nanotube quantum dots have in general different location and size. As a consequence, the conventional Anderson-Holstein model, coupling vibrons to the dot total charge only, may no longer be appropriated in general. Here we explicitly address the role of the spatial fluctuations of the electronic density, yielding space-dependent Franck-Condon factors. We discuss the consequent marked effects on transport which are compatible with recent measurements.     Penelitian ini adalah eksperimen laboratorium yang sifatnya pengenalan terhadap materi SCC.SCC atau Self Compacting Concrete adalah sebuah inovasi dalam teknologi konstruksi betondewasa ini yang menggunakan bahan tambah (admixture) untuk menghasilkan beton berkinerjatinggi. Pada penelitian ini ingin diketahui pengaruh penambahan admixture kimiaSuperplasticizer “Mighty 150 S” dan Retarder “Conplast Dessue Possolit” terhadap karakteristikSCC. Superplasticizer diberikan dalam 3 variasi kadar (1,5%, 2,0%, 2,5%) dengan mengurangikadar air campuran. Metode pengujian SCC dengan Slump-Cone Test pada kondisi segar dantes kuat tekan pada umur 3, 7, dan 28 hari. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan keadaan selfcompactibilitySCC tercapai pada semua kadar Superplasticizer yang diberikan. Tingkatkelecakan aliran (workabilitas) SCC meningkat sesuai penambahan kadar Superplasticizer, dansebaliknya, kekuatan tekan SCC menurun sesuai penambahan kadar Superplasticizer. Kondisioptimal SCC tercapai pada kadar 1,5% Superplasticize
